J.J. Stewart Root Beer

My friend found J.J. Stewart Root Beer on a recent trip to Prince Edward Island.  He brought me back a whole case of it.  I love the swingtop bottle, as it gives it an old fashioned feel to it.  B loves it out right.  Myself, I felt by itself it lacks maybe a bit of sweetness but it definitely packs a rooty punch!    Then I tried it with pizza and wings -  bingo! what a combination!  mmmm... Definitely high in the ranks, but didn't top my ranks... Thanks to D for the six pack!

Hey Song Sarsaparilla

I found Hey Song Sarsaparilla at T&T Market the other day while perusing the aisles there.   I was excited as this was another from overseas, Taiwan to be exact.   Anyways, B liked this one more than me.  I guess again it is one of those that has more a spice flavor to it.  It does contain high fructose corn syrup as it's sweetener, but I didn't enjoy this one at all.  In fact, I poured most of it out after giving half the can a try.

Cott Root Beer

Root Beer - A Walmart special (found it in the Massena, NY Walmart).  It is brewed by Cott.  It's just an average economical root beer -- not too sweet, but lacks some spice..

Mill Street Brewery Root Beer

Went to Mill St. Brewery today here in Ottawa, Ontario.   I tried their home brew root beer and it was quite refreshing and tasty!  It wasn't overly sweet , had a nice rooty flavour to it... I asked the store clerk if I could buy it in a bottle and he said no; however, he did mention that the location in Toronto has a novelty bottle.  Hmm.. road trip! (bottle required...)

Big K Root Beer

Big K Root Beer - cold, crisp, refreshing?  ummm.. nice try Big K, but not exactly.  This one was found by my sister and brother-in-law down in Great Falls, Montana.  It still is better than the 7-11 special that I found and also way better than Best Health's Root Beer....

Burp Rating: 4 / 10

Nice! Root Beer

Nice! Root Beer was found by my sister and brother-in-law while shopping down in Great Falls, Montana.  Nice! of them to bring me so many varieties from their trip!  Not so Nice! is the flavor of this one.  It sure is sugary though!  I'm sorry Nice!, I can't give you that high of a score.

Burp Rating:  2 / 10

Teddy's Root Beer

Teddy's was found by my sister and brother-in-law in Great Falls, Montana. This one's flavor is almost excellent!  Very nice balance of spice and sweetness.

Burp Rating: 9 / 10

Red Jammer Root Beer

Found Red Jammer in St. Mary's, Montana near Glacier National Park (GNP).  They also make a Huckleberry Soda that I really like, in fact it's better than the root beer.   The root beer tastes okay, but I found that there wasn't anything really special about it other than the cool label.  Red Jammers are the motor vehicles that used to travel up and around GNP.

Burp Rating:  6 / 10

Frostie Root Beer

My friend in Vancouver teased me by sending me pics of this root beer from a convenience store or gas station in Bellingham, Washington.  I was going to search for it when I went out that way in the future; however, my awesome sister and brother-in-law surprised me with it when I saw them this summer.  They found it in Great Falls, Montana on their shopping spree.  It tastes okay -- not terrible, but not great either...

Burp Rating:  7 / 10

Bedford's Root Beer

Another great find by my sister and brother-in-law down in Great Falls, Montana.  I love the label design.  The root beer itself was pretty good as well.  Not a 10, but it's close...

Burp Rating: 8 / 10

Brownie Caramel Cream Root Beer

My awesome sister and brother-in-law found this one for me in Great Falls, Montana on a recent shopping spree.  Brownie is decently spiced.  B actually enjoyed this one more than me, which means it is probably less sugary than others.

Burp Rating:  7 / 10

Dominion Root Beer

I found Dominion at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern in Herndon, Virginia when I was out there recently.   I really enjoyed the tavern -- it was trivia night and a lot of fun.  I ordered one root beer to drink and another to take home with me.  Dominion is rooty and sweetened just right.  I'm quite fond of it.

Burp Rating: 9 / 10

Faygo Root Beer

My friend D brought me a plastic bottle of Faygo from a trip out to Nova Scotia.  It's not bad, perhaps a bit too sweet (too much sugar).  I wouldn't consider it one of my favorites, but sure did appreciate my friend bringing this to me.

I recently found the glass bottle of Faygo in a downtown Detroit, MI convenience store. Score!  It tastes a lot better than the one in the plastic bottle.  I'm upping the rating by 1.

Burp Rating:  7 / 10

Americana Root Beer

Another root beer I found at Dougie Dog restaurant in Vancouver, B.C.  It boasts a delicious vintage; however, I didn't quite agree. Although not terrible, it was a little bit above average.

Burp Rating:  6 / 10

Bundaberg Australian Root Beer

A root beer from Australia?  Cool!  My good friend in Vancouver took me to a coffee shop called 49th Parallel.  The original plan was to get some whole bean coffee to take back to B (which she loved and considers her favorite now).  We find this root beer on the shelf!    It's very spicy and less sweet than N. American root beers.  B would love this one. I didn't unfortunately. Cool bottle tho!

Earp's Original Sarsaparilla

My good friend A in Vancouver took me to Granville Island on a recent visit.  I went back to the little shop in the middle of the market (where I found the Bulldog, Henry Weinhardts, Route 66 before).  This time, the shopkeeper had added this one to his arsenal and I can totally understand why.  I love this root beer and I wish I had one right now (even though it is breakfast time). It's that good.

Burp Rating:  10 / 10

Red Arrow Root Beer

Another root beer I found at Dougie Dog restaurant in Vancouver, B.C.

My sister and brother-in-law also found it for me in Great Falls, Montana.

This one is good. It's not over the top, but still nicely spiced and sweet.

Burp Rating:  7 / 10

Thomas Kemper Root Beer

I found Thomas Kemper in Vancouver, B.C. at Dougie Dog (restaurant on Granville St.).  This is a very good rooty root beer and brewed with natural honey! It's rich and creamy -- it definitely made an impression on me.

Burp Rating:  10 / 10

Dougie Dog Root Beer

I found this root beer at Dougie Dog, a restaurant on Granville Street in Vancouver, B.C.   They sold a variety of root beers including their Dougie's own brew.   The restaurant boasts a $100 hot dog if you are up for it!  :)

This root beer has a butterscotch and rooty taste to it.  It definitely is something different and I found it to be very good!

Burp Rating:   9 / 10

Babbling Brooke's Root Beer

Brewed by Better Bitters Brewing Company at the Nickel Brook micro brewery in Burlington, Ontario, this root beer was found at the D&S Southern Comfort BBQ in Carlsbad Springs, Ontario.   This one has a lot of spice, and has a mild sweetness to it hence why I didn't like it as much as B did.  B loves her spice and thinks this is her favorite all time.  Not mine though and this is my blog ... so....

L.L. Cote Root Beer

I found L.L. Cote Root Beer in a small gas station / grocery store in Errol, New Hampshire on our way down to Maine a couple years ago.  I'm not sure how common this one is.. I figured it was a local brew...  It didn't taste the best, as I felt it lacked some rootyness to it.  It wasn't awful though.

Burp Rating:  5 / 10

Captain Eli's Root Beer

I found Captain Eli's Root Beer in a grocery store in Maine close to Bar Harbor.  It is really really good -- I had my suspicions about it but wow was I wrong.. It is one of the best I've had and definitely recommend this one -- well balanced flavor and sweetness.   I just wish that I could find it closer to home here in Ottawa!

Burp Rating: 10 / 10

Old Soaker Root Beer

I found Old Soaker Root Beer in Bar Haror, Maine.  It is brewed there.  It's pretty good, but again not one of my favorites.

Burp Rating: 7 / 10

Polar Root Beer

I found Polar Root Beer also in the same grocery store as the Adirondack root beer in Vermont.  It's quite good, and has good rooty flavor.

Burp Rating: 8 / 10

Adirondack Root Beer

I found Adirondack Root Beer  in a grocery store in Vermont coming back from our trip to Maine. It's not bad. Got some spice to it as well a good sugary taste.  Picture is of the 2L bottle; however, I bought a 6 pack of 355ml cans.

Burp Rating: 7 / 10

Krisda Natural Soda Root Beer

B found this Krisda Natural Soda Root Beer in Ottawa at Billings Bridge Natural Food Pantry.  It's a healthy root beer as there is no sugar added.  The rooty taste is there, but I miss the sugar. :(

Sorry Krisda, but you just didn't do it for me.

Burp Rating: 2 / 10

Hank's Root beer

I found Hank's Root beer in Lethbridge, Alberta at Wholesale Sports.  It's a root beer crafted in Philadelphia.  Flavor is okay as it has some rooty'ness to it; however, it is not one of my favorites.

Burp Rating: 7 / 10

Sprecher Root Beer

I found Sprecher while I was down in Alexandria, Virginia a couple years ago.  I really like the cool bottle and as far as flavor goes, it is very creamy and rooty...  Love it...  It is in my top 10 for sure.

Burp Rating: 10 / 10

IBC Root Beer

A funny story about IBC Root Beer --  While I was down in NYC a few years ago, I searched Manhattan for it and never did find it.   When I got back home,  I found it!!! A top rated root beer amongst other root beer connaisseurs has finally been found in Ottawa - of all places, Red Lobster!?!  It is very good.. I even tried IBC's cream soda and it's up there too..  I don't think it's as good as Henry Weinhardts, Bulldog or Captain Eli's though..

Burp Rating:  9 / 10

Dr. Browns Root Beer

I found Dr. Browns Root Beer  in Lower Manhattan New York City.. It's okay but not the best.  I actually found it in a can -- haven't collected the bottle as of yet.

Burp Rating: 6 / 10

Maine Root Handcrafted Root Beer

I found Maine Root Handcrafted Root Beer the first time in New York City (in a can).  The bottle I found out in Maine near Bar Harbor in the summer of 2012.   I didn't really enjoy this one.   Actually it wasn't much better than Best Health or that 7-11 one...

Burp Rating: 3 / 10

Update (12/31/2014): This one can be found at Whole Foods Market in Ottawa now.

Best Health's Authentic Fountain Style Root Beer

Best Health's Authentic Fountain Style Root Beer -  Absolutely disgusting.. I took one sip and spit it out... dumped the rest in the sink.. bleh.. I found this one walking around in south Manhattan...

Burp Rating: 0 / 10

Sioux City Sarsaparilla

I found Sioux City Sarsaparilla in the Granville Island Market in Vancouver, B.C.   It looked promising, but unfortunately it just tasted like sugar and really had no bite to it.. But not as bad as the 7-11 root beer..

Burp Rating:  4 / 10

Bulldog Root Beer

Another root beer found in Granville Island Market in Vancouver B.C.   This one is in my top 5 all time favorites.  It is smooth, has a nice rooty flavour and overall just plain yummy!!!

Burp Rating:  10 / 10

7-11 Root Beer

I found this 7-11 Root Beer in a 7-11 walking down Robson Street in Vancouver..  Save your money and avoid this one at all costs! It's horrible! bleh bleh bleh!! Awful!

Burp Rating:  0 / 10

Old Town Route 66 Root Beer

I found Old Town Route 66 Root Beer in the Granville Island Market out in Vancouver B.C.   It is pretty smooth and creamy, but it doesn't meet my top expectations.

Henry Weinhardt's Draught Style Root Beer

I found Henry Weinhardt's (I call it Hank's) Draught Style Root Beer originally in the Granville Island Market in Vancouver, B.C. a few years back (circa 2009)

Hank's is ultimately one of  my favorite root beer so far. Wow.  Spiced really nicely and great to drink on a hot day in the sun.. wow!

I was told by one of the staff at DiRienzo Foods in Ottawa that there is now a supplier out of Montreal that sells Henry Weinhardt's.  I am so happy for this!!

Big 8 Root Beer

A co-worker of mine from Stats Can brought me a bottle of this one from the east coast years ago (circa 2003/2004)..  Big8 is a popular soda brand in Atlantic Canada.   It wasn't bad.. a bit too sweet maybe...

Burp Rating: 5 / 10

Hires Root Beer

Hires Root Beer is another one that has been around for ages.. although I can't seem to find it easily around here in Ottawa these days.. I can't remember what it tastes like... I do remember they used to sell Hires Root Beer extract so that you can make your own at home.. was that any good?  my memory fails me... hmm...

so at the moment,

A&W Root Beer

Gone are the days of the 1 gallon glass jugs of tasty A&W root beer.  In recent years, A&W has become too big and I don't think they have their same passion as they did back in the early days.

Burp Rating:  5 / 10

Mug Root Beer

When I was a teenager, Mug came out and I really enjoyed it (more so than A&W ..go figure...)   Now it tastes just average to me.... hmm...

Burp Rating: 5 / 10

Barq's Root Beer

A root beer with caffeine.. when I'm tired and craving a root beer and a wake me up, this is my go to root beer.  It packs a punch. :)

Burp Rating: 6 / 10

Beaver Soda Root Beer

Found this one at a 7/11 convenience store a while back. Interesting flavour, although not one of my favorites.

Burp Rating: 6 / 10

Dad's Root Beer

Another above average root beer found quite easily in most major convenience stores.  I found a whole case at Independent Grocers.   Makes a great root beer float ;)

Burp Rating: 8 / 10

Boylan's Root Beer

I found Boylan's years ago in Hartman's grocery store here in Ottawa.  These days, Farm Boy is selling them as well.  It's another above average brew - not my favorite.

Burp Rating: 7 / 10

Hansen's Signature Sarsaparilla Soda

This one has seemed to disappeared from the market here in Ottawa :( Not sure they even make it anymore. If anyone knows where I can find one, please let me know.. It's been a long time since I've had one. Very yummy..

Oh, and if anyone has an empty bottle they are willing to part with, I would love to add it to my bottle collection. Thanks :)
