Gale's Root Beer

Gale's Root Beer is another I found here in Ottawa.  Gale writes on the label: " Rootie and I know you’ll love it. Enjoy!"  Well, rootie it definitely is!  She's added cinnamon, ginger, and vanilla to pack that rootie punch.  At first I thought it was a bit too much rootiness for me, but after a while, it kind of wore off on me.  Although not scoring top marks with me, it is an above average root beer.

Pop Shoppe Root Beer

The Pop Shoppe Root Beer reminds me when I was a kid.  Back home, we had Pic-A-Pop ... For some reason this design and such kind of reminded me of my childhood soda... Taste-wise, this one has a nice balance of spice and maybe a bit on the sweet side.

Cariboo Root Beer

Cariboo root beer is an interesting brew that I picked up recently in the Ottawa area.  0.5% alcohol?!?  Really?  Hmmm.  This root beer has some kick.  Spiced very nicely.  An above average soda but not quite a perfect score for me.

Appalachian Root Beer

Appalachian Root Beer was brought to me by my friend and colleague, V.P.  Very special thanks to him for bringing me a 6 pack of this brew from Philadelphia, PA.

Brewed by the Appalachian Brewery Company (ABC) sweetened with honey (Pasha Bear approves!), this root beer packs a real big punch with a perfect balance of spice and sweetness!  I had to force myself to drink this one slowly.  I savored every swig.   I'm going to have to ration the remaining bottles.  ABC, thanks so much for an amazing root beer! (Pasha Bear says thanks too)

Harvey and Vern's Root Beer

Harvey and Vern's Root Beer is an Ottawa locally brewed root beer by Kichesippi Brewery.    I was anticipating the arrival of this being from Ottawa and all.   Taste-wise, I found this soda above average but it didn't provide me with a sense of urgency to go out and buy more.

GuS Dry Root Beer

GuS - Grown-up Soda Dry Root Beer :  I found this one at Grace in the Kitchen in Kanata, Ontario.   This one is 100% natural and contains no caffeine or preservatives.   I wish I could say I enjoyed this one, but I guess my taste buds just could not reach a liking to it.  I tasted the pure sparkling water with the birch oil / vanilla / clove flavoring but just didn't gain an appreciation for it.

Johnnie Ryan Root Beer

While on a recent trip down to Kingston, Ontario I found Johnnie Ryan Root Beer at Harper's Burger Bar on Princess Street.   I didn't have time to sit down and eat a meal but stopped in to buy a couple bottles before heading home.  Some day I would like to eat at Harper's as the food looked and smelled delicious!

This root beer comes from Niagra Falls, NY and is sweetened with cane sugar.  I enjoyed it and found it above average.   It might need a bit more of a spice kick.

Sarsi.   A very cool find here in Ottawa, Ontario.  Sarsi is a sarsaparilla soft drink (root beer I'd say) that is a product of the Philipines and found in most Southeast Asia countries.  The label says it is sweetened with sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).  Usually the HFCS leaves a soda very sweet, but Sarsi is actually nicely balanced!  Could use a bit more spice, but overall it's an impressive drink.

Stewart's Shops Root Beer

I found Stewart's Shops Root Beer on a recent grocery trip to Watertown, New York.  Stewart's Shops are a chain of convenience stores found in New York and Vermont.  They have their own brand of sodas and root beer is one of them.  This root beer is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, which I'm not too fond of.  This root beer is very very sweet and find that the spice gets lost because of the sweetness.

Pappy's Root Beer

Pappy's Soda Pop Co. Root Beer -  Today in Ottawa, Ribtoberfest is a new festival that brings in pit masters from all over North America to feed us yummy BBQ.  Pappy's Soda also showed up selling their signature sodas.  Naturally, I had to try their root beer.  Save your money folks, unless you want a mug of pure sugar.  This one has so much sugar, I'm sad they even call it root beer.  I had to spend $8 for the mug of it, and sadly I'm just shaking my head at it.  :(

J.J. Stewart Root Beer

My friend found J.J. Stewart Root Beer on a recent trip to Prince Edward Island.  He brought me back a whole case of it.  I love the swingtop bottle, as it gives it an old fashioned feel to it.  B loves it out right.  Myself, I felt by itself it lacks maybe a bit of sweetness but it definitely packs a rooty punch!    Then I tried it with pizza and wings -  bingo! what a combination!  mmmm... Definitely high in the ranks, but didn't top my ranks... Thanks to D for the six pack!

Hey Song Sarsaparilla

I found Hey Song Sarsaparilla at T&T Market the other day while perusing the aisles there.   I was excited as this was another from overseas, Taiwan to be exact.   Anyways, B liked this one more than me.  I guess again it is one of those that has more a spice flavor to it.  It does contain high fructose corn syrup as it's sweetener, but I didn't enjoy this one at all.  In fact, I poured most of it out after giving half the can a try.

Cott Root Beer

Root Beer - A Walmart special (found it in the Massena, NY Walmart).  It is brewed by Cott.  It's just an average economical root beer -- not too sweet, but lacks some spice..

Mill Street Brewery Root Beer

Went to Mill St. Brewery today here in Ottawa, Ontario.   I tried their home brew root beer and it was quite refreshing and tasty!  It wasn't overly sweet , had a nice rooty flavour to it... I asked the store clerk if I could buy it in a bottle and he said no; however, he did mention that the location in Toronto has a novelty bottle.  Hmm.. road trip! (bottle required...)

Big K Root Beer

Big K Root Beer - cold, crisp, refreshing?  ummm.. nice try Big K, but not exactly.  This one was found by my sister and brother-in-law down in Great Falls, Montana.  It still is better than the 7-11 special that I found and also way better than Best Health's Root Beer....

Burp Rating: 4 / 10

Nice! Root Beer

Nice! Root Beer was found by my sister and brother-in-law while shopping down in Great Falls, Montana.  Nice! of them to bring me so many varieties from their trip!  Not so Nice! is the flavor of this one.  It sure is sugary though!  I'm sorry Nice!, I can't give you that high of a score.

Red Jammer Root Beer

Found Red Jammer in St. Mary's, Montana near Glacier National Park (GNP).  They also make a Huckleberry Soda that I really like, in fact it's better than the root beer.   The root beer tastes okay, but I found that there wasn't anything really special about it other than the cool label.  Red Jammers are the motor vehicles that used to travel up and around GNP.

Frostie Root Beer

My friend in Vancouver teased me by sending me pics of this root beer from a convenience store or gas station in Bellingham, Washington.  I was going to search for it when I went out that way in the future; however, my awesome sister and brother-in-law surprised me with it when I saw them this summer.  They found it in Great Falls, Montana on their shopping spree.  It tastes okay -- not terrible, but not great either...

Burp Rating:  7 / 10

Bedford's Root Beer

Another great find by my sister and brother-in-law down in Great Falls, Montana.  I love the label design.  The root beer itself was pretty good as well.  Not a 10, but it's close...

Brownie Caramel Cream Root Beer

My awesome sister and brother-in-law found this one for me in Great Falls, Montana on a recent shopping spree.  Brownie is decently spiced.  B actually enjoyed this one more than me, which means it is probably less sugary than others.

Dominion Root Beer

I found Dominion at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern in Herndon, Virginia when I was out there recently.   I really enjoyed the tavern -- it was trivia night and a lot of fun.  I ordered one root beer to drink and another to take home with me.  Dominion is rooty and sweetened just right.  I'm quite fond of it.

Burp Rating: 9 / 10

Faygo Root Beer

My friend D brought me a plastic bottle of Faygo from a trip out to Nova Scotia.  It's not bad, perhaps a bit too sweet (too much sugar).  I wouldn't consider it one of my favorites, but sure did appreciate my friend bringing this to me.

I recently found the glass bottle of Faygo in a downtown Detroit, MI convenience store. Score!  It tastes a lot better than the one in the plastic bottle.  I'm upping the rating by 1.

Bundaberg Australian Root Beer

A root beer from Australia?  Cool!  My good friend in Vancouver took me to a coffee shop called 49th Parallel.  The original plan was to get some whole bean coffee to take back to B (which she loved and considers her favorite now).  We find this root beer on the shelf!    It's very spicy and less sweet than N. American root beers.  B would love this one. I didn't unfortunately. Cool bottle tho!

Earp's Original Sarsaparilla

My good friend A in Vancouver took me to Granville Island on a recent visit.  I went back to the little shop in the middle of the market (where I found the Bulldog, Henry Weinhardts, Route 66 before).  This time, the shopkeeper had added this one to his arsenal and I can totally understand why.  I love this root beer and I wish I had one right now (even though it is breakfast time). It's that good.

Burp Rating:  10 / 10

Red Arrow Root Beer

Another root beer I found at Dougie Dog restaurant in Vancouver, B.C.

My sister and brother-in-law also found it for me in Great Falls, Montana.

This one is good. It's not over the top, but still nicely spiced and sweet.

Burp Rating:  7 / 10

Thomas Kemper Root Beer

I found Thomas Kemper in Vancouver, B.C. at Dougie Dog (restaurant on Granville St.).  This is a very good rooty root beer and brewed with natural honey! It's rich and creamy -- it definitely made an impression on me.

Burp Rating:  10 / 10

Dougie Dog Root Beer

I found this root beer at Dougie Dog, a restaurant on Granville Street in Vancouver, B.C.   They sold a variety of root beers including their Dougie's own brew.   The restaurant boasts a $100 hot dog if you are up for it!  :)

This root beer has a butterscotch and rooty taste to it.  It definitely is something different and I found it to be very good!

Babbling Brooke's Root Beer

Brewed by Better Bitters Brewing Company at the Nickel Brook micro brewery in Burlington, Ontario, this root beer was found at the D&S Southern Comfort BBQ in Carlsbad Springs, Ontario.   This one has a lot of spice, and has a mild sweetness to it hence why I didn't like it as much as B did.  B loves her spice and thinks this is her favorite all time.  Not mine though and this is my blog ... so....

L.L. Cote Root Beer

I found L.L. Cote Root Beer in a small gas station / grocery store in Errol, New Hampshire on our way down to Maine a couple years ago.  I'm not sure how common this one is.. I figured it was a local brew...  It didn't taste the best, as I felt it lacked some rootyness to it.  It wasn't awful though.

Burp Rating:  5 / 10

Captain Eli's Root Beer

I found Captain Eli's Root Beer in a grocery store in Maine close to Bar Harbor.  It is really really good -- I had my suspicions about it but wow was I wrong.. It is one of the best I've had and definitely recommend this one -- well balanced flavor and sweetness.   I just wish that I could find it closer to home here in Ottawa!

IBC Root Beer

A funny story about IBC Root Beer --  While I was down in NYC a few years ago, I searched Manhattan for it and never did find it.   When I got back home,  I found it!!! A top rated root beer amongst other root beer connaisseurs has finally been found in Ottawa - of all places, Red Lobster!?!  It is very good.. I even tried IBC's cream soda and it's up there too..  I don't think it's as good as Henry Weinhardts, Bulldog or Captain Eli's though..

Hank's is ultimately one of  my favorite root beer so far. Wow.  Spiced really nicely and great to drink on a hot day in the sun.. wow!
